Hugh McGuirk (1823-1913) (ph_4033)
Born in St. John, New Brunswick, Hugh studied theology in Quebec where he became a priest in 1847.
He was appointed parish priest of Saint-Basile in 1857. With funds bequeathed by his predecessor,
Msgr. Antoine Langevin, he had the Academy of Madawaska built. Father McGuirk left Saint-Basile in
1869 and retired at the Hôtel-Dieu in Chatham in 1870. Photo on metal, around 1847
